Not such sound construction

After much research I felt good about buying this mattress, even online and sight unseen. But after just one week of use it literally split at the seam. Here’s what happened: My husband was flipping it over to determine which was the more firm side, when he noticed a long, loose thread. He went to cut it and it pulled in his hand, tearing the entire vinyl side apart on top and side so that the foam core was completely exposed. We have reached out to the vendor and our next step is to reach out to the manufacturer to try to refund our purchase — not interested in a replacement! — but it’s completely not worth the big price tag for such poor quality in our opinion.UPDATE: Vendor was horrible about any kind of compensation, and I wrote up a report and submitted to Consumer Reports. I don’t know that they did anything about it, but I felt better. Went out and bought a springs-based baby mattress from one of the big-name brands and we have been using relatively happily since.

Less than thrilled

We purchased this mattress for our new born son, about a week before he arrived I noticed the mattress was ripped in the corner and the top layer was peeling off. I didn’t want to take the risk of buying another so we just returned it and went with the Sealy Soybean Firm infant mattress which we love!!

Can’t get baby to sleep on it

I purchased this mattress prior to my baby being born because of the great reviews and because it has the two different sides with different firmness. When I put it in the crib I was thinking it felt very firm so I turned the mattress to the toddler side. I really couldn’t tell the difference between the infant side and the toddler side. Pediatricians recommend very firm mattresses so I thought this was great. However, my 8 week old baby hates this mattress. She refuses to sleep on it no matter what I do. I purchased a crib pad to try and soften it up but it’s still too firm for her. She’ll sleep anywhere but on this mattress! She’ll even fall asleep on the carpet over this mattress. I’m hoping she’ll just get used to it eventually. It does fit our Baby Cache crib perfectly and I find the quality to be top notch. I just wish she liked it as much as I thought she would!

Like it

I like it so far my little one goes to sleep right away and stays asleep for quiet some time. Can not say anything to the toddler side yet.

Made in America

It’s nice and firm, it has two sides for baby or toddler, it’s reasonably priced, it’s well made, and best of all, it’s made right here in the U.S. by a family company. Sure, I paid more than I might have if I’d purchased the Wal-**** special, but supporting an American “mom and pop” company is important. You cannot argue the quality. The mattress was made one month before I received it, as indicated on the tag. Our son is arriving in June, so we have not had the occasion to use the mattress yet, but I can’t imagine I’d ever have a complaint. The mattress did not smell plasticky or have any kind of chemical odor whatsoever upon opening. Fits great in our Graco Sarah crib, very snug, no gaps. I am very pleased with it and grateful that companies like Colgate are still in existence.Update 11-8-12My son is now 4 months old and he seems to like this mattress. It is very firm, but he sleeps 9+ hours per night and takes excellent 1.5-2 hour naps during the day. He will only sleep for 30 minutes at a time at daycare, and I think it’s because he’s not comfy. Before moving to his crib at 3 months, he slept in our room in his Pack N’ Play. He sleeps so much better on this!

Best Infant/Toddler Mattress

This mattress is worth every penny! It fits perfectly in my Kendall Pottery Barn crib. (It’s also A LOT cheaper than the mattress Pottery Barn offered, but a million times better.. SOOOO glad I went with this Colgate mattress and not the one in the store.) One side is very firm for baby & the other side is a little softer for toddler. The foam is firmer than most, which my husband and I like because it is safer for the child. It also has a very durable and washable outside material. And is Greenguard certified. I would recommend this mattress to my family and friends. A+++ rating!

Quality mattress

We purchased the Colgate Classica mattress due to is recommendation in the Baby Bargains book. The product has lived up to their reviews and our expectations. Quality construction, secure fit in our crib, and the firmness that babies require. We went with the foam mattress due to the overall weight. Changing crib sheets is difficult and the foam mattress at least cuts down on the weight one has to lift and move in order to do so.

Great mattress, getting another for baby #2

We’ve been using this mattress for almost 2 years now, and my daughter sleeps on it very well. It’s firm, but my daughter has never had a problem, and loves going to bed every night. It’s light and waterproof – easy to move and clean. We’re expecting baby #2 and will be buying another one.

Thrilled with My Choice

I researched crib mattresses like an obsessed woman. My husband got so tired of the fact that I was going back and forth on which one to choose that he told me to just order one. I almost chose a cheaper one from another company. However, now that I have this in my hands, I am so glad I chose this one! I decided to try it because it is made in America, GreenGuard certified, and has a firmer side for infants and a softer side for toddlers. Plus, I realized that it has holes built in for the mattress to breathe. (While researching, I also discovered that Martha Stewart even endorsed this brand on a nursery segment on her show. That might not win some other people over, but it sounds good to me since she has gotten into more baby and toddler products now that she is a grandma to two.) I would’ve spent more money to upgrade to an even more expensive Colgate mattress, but I couldn’t justify it since we haven’t been a two-income household for several years. I know some people are concerned about chemicals from vinyl covers, but since this is GreenGuard certified I talked myself out of spending more money on a Colgate with a cotton cover. We do smell some odor from it new out of the package, but we only smell it when we put our noses right up to one of the holes and sniff hard. We are letting it off-gas before use. We have a Bonavita Carla crib from about eight years ago. This is a snug fit in it, but that is as it should be. There are not any gaps that would be hazardous. I will note that there is one place where the binding is not sewn the best. It looks like the stitching caught the edge of the binding for just a few stitches. However, everything is attached…at least for now. Since we have not tried this, I cannot tell you what our almost two-year-old has to say. However, she seemed happy enough when I got her to lay on it with me for a bit after we opened it. As other reviewers have said, it is super light. We are replacing a cheap innerspring coiled Sealy from a certain close-out store with a black and orange logo. Now I wish we had spent the money on this from the start and skipped the cheap mattress. It just feels so much better, and I have no doubt that it will be durable enough to take whatever my active girl has to dish out and last through a second baby.UPDATING: We have been using this for more than a few weeks. My toddler apparently has no issues with it. She has followed her normal sleep patterns and routine, and she continues to sleep without issue. I’m not sure what she would say if she could give me a report on the mattress, but seeing her sleep so well is wonderful!

Purchased for the second time

We bought one of these for our first child and he’s still using it so this is our second. I couldn’t sleep on it, it’s hard as a rock but he loves it.

Wonderful! No spaces!

I was excited when I put the mattress in my crib (which takes a standard sized mattress) and had to push on it a little to get it down all the way- NO SPACES in the sides or corners! It is also vented in the sides which gave me more peace of mind when thinking of how hot foam can get and the issues some foam mattresses can have with bacteria and such- that shouldn’t be a problem with this mattress as it has a waterproof cover and is vented. The mattress is also extremely light, I handled it in the box easily at 6 months pregnant. I bought it because it was the top baby bargains recommendation, and am extremely glad I spent the extra money on a great mattress!

We loved the first one so much, we bought another for our second child

I heard of this mattress brand in the Baby Bargains book, and that book really had it right – these are great mattresses, and they’re the exact right combination of “the features you need” at “the quality you want” at “the price you want to pay”. There’s really no reason to buy any other type or brand of crib mattress.

good mattress but FIRM

yes, crib mattresses are supposed to be firm, but even the soft side of this one is still quite firm if you ask me, never even used the infant side. we added a mattress pad which makes it a little better, but not much. other than that, happy with it. did not have any defects as mentioned in a couple of other reviews. lightweight which makes changing the sheets very easy.

So far its great

Have been using for 3 months. My little one sleeps in in great. Not as hard as some reviewers have said. You want it to be firm. And we could tell which side was which my feeling it. Not as issue. No smells, no problems. Fits tightly in our Pali crib.
