TOO SMALL FOR STANDARD CRIB
The mattress is firm and has a soft cotton cover….however there is a 2 inch gap in the length of the mattress and IKEA crib our daughter purchased. After closer inspection the mattress does not measure to the stated dimensions. It will bereturned, but very disappointed.
Much better than our Pebble Nook
We bought this for the crib at my mom’s house for when we visit. It was immediately clear that though it’s less expensive than the Pebble Nook, it is far superior. We wish we had gotten this for home, and have considered swapping the two. Baby has only slept on it for about 20 or so nights in all, but we were impressed.
Nice Quality and Firmness
My mom bought this mattress for me off my baby registry. We like the dual firmness for baby and toddler and the soft cotton covering instead of the plasticy cover on most mattresses. The cotton has a waterproof backing so it’s still waterproof without plastic being right under your baby’s sheet. It fits our crib perfectly, no gapping or spaces. We have the AFG Nadia crib (it’s on it’s second baby as we bought it with our older daughter and just bought a new mattress this time). I don’t think I could be happier with any other crib mattress.
I THOUGHT I was very happy with this mattress, HOWEVER deceptive advertising?
UPDATE:4/8/14 – I purchased two of these mattresses and spent over $500 on them. Expensive, but I figured I would pay top dollar for something relatively safer and “cleaner” than standard typical mattresses. Well, I recently purchased the matching waterproof mattress cover from Colgate and was surprised at what I found. It is sold as “organic cotton”, however the label stated 100% polyester. I called the company and they did not have a good answer for me. The woman said, “Oh no it’s organic cotton. Maybe it’s the wrong label, but that doesn’t matter anyway because you cut it off after you get it.” NOT THE RIGHT ANSWER. I am paying a premium for a product advertised as organic cotton, yet the label doesn’t state something like — 100% polyester (exclusive of surface) or anything like that. If you are selling a product as organic cotton, you definitely would be stating that on the material label as other companies do.SO… now that made me suspect of this mattress, which states (and looks) like the same “certified organic cotton” surface. I looked at the material label on the mattress and it states “92% Urethane foam 8% Rayon”. Once again, where is the organic cotton????!!!!I really wish the company would address this issue. I highly doubt that these are all errors on the labels. If you really have a product made with organic cotton, you state it.Original review: I spent a long time researching different crib mattresses. I have two cribs and initially received a different brand because it was the best available at Babies R Us. I kept that mattress for my secondary crib, but wanted to find a more natural, organic one that would serve as my infant’s main crib mattress. I purchased this one several months ago and am very happy with it. There are two sides of firmness, to different degrees – one for a newborn and one for a toddler (they are both firm though.) There are no sagging spots and all crib sheets seem to fit perfectly on this mattress. There is no plastic odor like with some mattresses and this was very important to me. The mattress itself is soft and plush, but not waterproof, so make sure you buy a waterproof lining for under your sheets. This may negate the whole organic thing, but I don’t want to ruin an expensive mattress after one accident.
Everything we hoped for
We struggled with selecting a mattress for a few weeks which was stressful on top of all the other decisions we had to make. There are a wide range of price options, but this one seemed to be well reviewed so we took a chance and have not been disappointed. Things we liked:- It is two sided which means that it can be used longer. You start with the more firm side and then when you convert to a toddler bed you flip it over to the softer side. While this was a little more expensive, we expect to get more use out of it.- The material is quite soft and is clearly natural – no problems with smells or other things- The mattress fit the crib perfectly- The mattress is light and easy to lift for changing the sheetsSome reviewers have complained about a plastic smell. I noticed this too and contributed it to the mattress being wrapped in plastic for shipping. It aired out in a couple of days and now smells fine.Hope this helps – good luck.
Got by accident (so glad I did!)
I actually ordered the non Eco Colgate III mattress, but recieved this one instead! What a fantastic mattress this is! So easy to put the sheets on and they fit so snug. I purchased Colgate since they are a small (and local to me) company that I wanted to support. We also have their changing table pad, and from my experience I would HIGHLY recommended any product that they make.
I am very happy with this mattress, equal to my own tempurpedic. My son has been sleeping on it for the past 3 months, since 2 weeks of age when we moved him into his own room. I love the fact that has two sides with different degrees of firmness. It is more expensive then a basic crib mattress, but I didn’t want to expose my child to extra chemicals. Fits our Babyletto crib.
Researched payed off!
Since I am having my first baby I became a research freak! I have read pretty much about every mattress out there and asked as many moms I could about the mattress. I read about SIDS, soft spot, how the mattress should be firm for newborns, etc, etc. After extensive research I found this mattress to fit perfectly on the safety standards and major criteria I was looking for.It fits perfectly on the crib (I have a Graco) and having two sides so it can transition from newborn to toddler could justify spending so much money on a newborn mattress.Shipping was fast and packaging was great as it came intact and very well protected.I highly recommend.
Doesn’t work with the infant motion monitors. You know the plates that are intended to let you know if you baby isn’t breathing? I LIVE by those monitors and this mattress doesn’t work with the plates. We have this mattress at our second home and the baby loves it and now that he is 7 months I am not as worried about SIDS. THAT is my ONLY complaint!
We spent a long time looking for a mattress that was healthier and yet didn’t cost more than our bed. This was a good middle ground. Granted, it’s not 100% wool with no fire retardants etc – which would be ideal, but neither is spending $500 either! The mattress is very light, easy to take in and out of crib, seems very supportive, and is two sided so can grow with baby into toddler age. Overall, we are happy with the purchase.
This is a great mattress. We agonized over the baby’s mattress for a couple of weeks. We couldn’t decide whether to go with organic or not. Most of our friends did not buy organic mattresses and were perfectly fine with what they chose for their babies, but we didn’t want to skimp on a decision like this one, but also didn’t want to go crazy as the pricing on some of these mattresses varies significantly. We read reviews for a more popular and more expensive mattress, but those reviews seemed pretty average and we weren’t convinced. We heard that Colgate was #1 for the regular mattress, and read the reviews. This version didn’t have many reviews, but the ones it did have were favorable. Given that the price, at $200, no tax and free shipping, wasn’t that much more than the regular version, and the reputation of the Colgate mattresses, we decided to take the chance, and if we weren’t happy, we could replace the mattress. Well, we’re very happy. There was no smell to the mattress when we received it, and the cotton cover is very nice. It’s firm and our baby sleeps very comfortably on the mattress. Just like a baby’s mattress is supposed to, it fits snugly in our baby’s Pali crib. It is difficult for me to lift in and out of my baby’s crib when changing sheets, even though the mattress doesn’t weigh that much. I have De Quervain’s tendinitis, so everything I do with my wrists is painful. I recommend getting Clouds and Stars zip sheets so that you can avoid the extra hassle of changing sheets. I was skeptical about getting such expensive organic cotton sheets, but I now see the hype. Anyway, that’s a completely different review. Get this mattress. You won’t regret it!
Happy Mommy and baby!
I bought this as a montessori floor bed for my 5 month old- so far it is great. I have it on the infant side and it is quite firm, which I like. I guess my baby likes it too because the first night she slept through the night only getting up once for a feeding- usually she is up at least 2 times over the night. This mattress is firm enough for me to nurse her to sleep and then get up without disturbing her- so far I’m happy and no chemically smells right out of the packaging.
Excelent Quality and perfect firmness for a new born.
Just like most of amazon buyers, I did lots of research to educate myself about a mattress for our new born. I looked at various mattresses from $59 to $399 and finally settled on the Colgate Eco Classica III. The mattress arrived 4-5 days later and I used amazon’s free delivery. The material is of premium quality, which is expected from a mattress of this price range. We have Baby Cache Oxford convertible crib and the mattress fits the crib perfectly without any gaps. I find its firmness just right. Someone posted that it feels like sleeping on a cardboard, I find that comment/review rather silly as the weight of a new born/toddler is much lower than the weight of an average adult, therefore internal compression of the body due to it’s weight is less significant in a lighter individual. In other words, a plush soft mattress would feel more comfortable for a heavy set person.Im am not aware of a single study that shows clinical significance of “ECO” friendly mattresses and children’s development nor global impact it might play in the environment. I am a believer in limiting the amount of exposure to chemicals that one day might become linked to problems that we are not aware of today.
love this mattress!
This mattress is excellent. It’s VERY lightweight, which makes it easy to do sheet changes. It’s firm yet comfortable and seems like it will last quite awhile.
Love this mattress. It is light easy to change the sheets. It fits perfectly in my jenny lind divinci crib.
firm and comfy
great bed. we replaced a typical spring mattress with this one. much more baby friendly and allows for her to roll as needed and not get bogged down in soft spots in the mattress. we are still using the hard side for now. either side really would be appropriate for an infant. no nasty smell unwrapping it – good quality.
Lightweight and so comfortable.
Bought this for visiting grandson. It is lightweight and easy to lift out of crib to change mattress pad and sheets. I have a bad neck and back, this is very easy to lift when mattress is at lowest station in crib. Very happy with purchase. Love that it has 2 different foam sides.
I love this mattress! I feel totally safe having my son sleep on it, and I love that it’s more environmentally friendly than other mattresses out there. Baby sleeps well on it, and it’s absolutely worth the cost to know he’s safe. The mattress and the car seat are two things that are well worth the investment.
I originally purchased the Colgate Eco Classica I Crib Mattress, Beige because this product was supposed to take 4-6 weeks to ship. However, I returned that item and purchased this one instead when a few days later it was in stock and ready to ship within a couple of days. I’m glad I exchanged the items, because I prefer that this mattress is dual-sided in terms of firmness. The fabric on this one is not quite as fancy as the other one (which was a smooth cotton damask), but for the price (this one is only $10 more), I hope to get more years of use. The firmer side seems a bit less firm than the Eco Classica I. The product is light, so easy to maneuver, and was well-packed. There was no smell after unpacking the mattress, and it fit my Baby Europa Palisades crib perfectly. I haven’t tried fitting sheets on it yet, and the baby hasn’t arrived yet, so I can’t comment on actually using it just yet.9/25/12 Update: After over one month of use, still happy with mattress. However, we did flip it over to use the slightly softer toddler side for our one-month old. The softer side plus a more padded organic cotton mattress pad seemed more comfortable while still being safe, though obviously she cannot tell us if it is or isn’t.
No strong smell
I was pleased that this mattress didn’t have a strong smell. It was packaged minimally, which is a perk. The infant side is very firm, but I do like that. I use an organic waterproof mattress pad and organic crib sheet that adds some padding and softness to it! Bought them both on Amazon. Hoping this mattress will last through all my kids, it’s been pretty solid so far.
No trouble with it so far!
My son co-slept with us on a Tempurpedic mattress till he was a year old. Since he was used to sleeping on a foam mattress, I wanted to buy him a foam mattress for his crib. I also wanted an organic one since he is one of those babies who sleeps on his tummy with his face stuffed into the mattress (this habit of his gave us more than a few sleepless nights – he has done it so often now (and is older), that it doesn’t worry me anymore — but it was a big concern when I noticed this behavior).I was originally going to get theColgate Eco Classica I Crib Mattress, Beigemattress (as per Baby Bargain reviews), but was concerned since a lot of reviews said that the mattress was hard. So, I went with this one – even though I knew I wasn’t going to get to use the Infant side much.I put my son on the toddler side, and he has had no trouble with the transition. He sleeps as well on it as he slept on our mattress. On a side note, a lot of the reviews said that Colgate doesn’t mark the infant and toddler sides of this mattress. The mattress I received has a label which clearly marks these sides.
Colgate Eco Classica III Dual Firmness Eco-Friendlier Crib Mattress, Ecru
We love this mattress! It had absolutely no smell upon opening, fits our Graco crib like a glove, seems to be very well made (made in the USA!!), and appears to be the perfect blend of comfort and firmness. Why buy some Chinese crap that is full of toxins just to save a few bucks?? Our baby will be spending quite a bit of time on this mattress, so we definitely thought it was worth the money. This one is less expensive than the Naturepedic, and I can’t possibly see how it could be of lesser quality.
