too small to be useful on its own

On its own it confines baby to a very small area – need to use the wall on one side and hope that the gate can be configured to fit the house architecture. Didn’t work for us. The pictures are misleading as to how large the enclosed play area is – you have to use 2 such gates in some of the pictures. In fact, the picture showing two kids playing together, has 8-panels, so it includes an extension. My son looked like he was doing time enclosed in this gate. Also, at only 8 months, he could shake it so hard it was bound to collapse. And yes, it did scratch the hardwood floors. This gate and the sorry look of my kid confined in it trying to break out, convinced me for good that gates for babies are inhumane. I childproofed an entire room at first, and eventually the entire house, so the baby can roam around and explore. I only have gates at the top and bottom of the stairs, but that’s it. I think it’s much better for their development to create a “do touch” environment.

Solid product with one stupid design flaw

First, I want to say I have not yet completely installed this product but I like it already. The gates themselves are solid. They have nice bumper pads on the bottom so as to not scratch the wood floors in my home. The gate itself is extremely safe but a little difficult to open. If you have looked at other gates you will often find ones of parents complaining that their toddler figured out how to open it on their own. That would be extremely difficult here as it has a locking button that must be pressed before the gate is then lifted to be opened. The gate only swings one direction which is too bad and could’ve been fixed with a different style hinge. That sections themselves can be pressure locked into place, making this a very stable play-yard/large gate for your home. Sections can be easily lifted out and removed or added back in. This thing is very versitile in terms of configuration. BUT it has one really stupid design flaw that can be fixed by the consumer but should’ve just been done by the manufacturer in the first place.THE FLAW:The gate sections interlock at the hinge and then are held into place by screwing in a support bar. At each hinge, there is one side that goes up and ones side that goes down (male and female for simplicity’s sake). Thus you need one male and one female hinge to fit together for the sections to interlock. The other aspect to this is that if you are hooking the play-yard up to a wall or you are using this as a large gate, the top bracket to hook this to the wall is also male or female (you get one of each in the box). The final piece to this is that rather than making each gate section have one female and one male hinge piece on each side, the company decided to make each gate section have two male or two female hinge pieces. Because they did this, it limits the configuration that you can easily do out of the box. For me, I want to use this as a gate with only 5 sections instead of six which made it so the exposed ends to fit in the wall bracket were both female… but I get one female and one male wall bracket… Likewise, if you were to buy the two section expansion for this product but only want to use one section, you would run into the same problem. Note that this will only effect those that intend to use an odd number of gate sections!!!On a related note, the reason for this could be that the hinge piece are not “ambidextrous.” Meaning that they can fully fold in on each other one way but not the other (you are limited to a little larger than 90 degree angel I believe). So, the above issue might be there so that the gate can fold up all neat and nice to be stored. If that is the case, I supposed it makes sense…THE FIX:The hinge pieces are held in place by a single screw on the bottom of the gate section. You can simply unscrew these and swap them out with the gate piece you don’t intend to use. This took me only a few minutes but it took me a while to figure it out at first. If the above reason I am theorizing is correct, the manufacturer could’ve simply thrown two of each top bracket in to save the consumer a lot of trouble. This would not help those making this into an enclosed playyard using an odd number of gate sections but I have a feeling that issue is a lot less prevelent and a lot easier to simply cope with.In the end, this is a solid product and much cheaper than some of its competitors (like the Kidco Configure Gate which is about twice as much for the same number of gate sections). Highly recommended.

Love it

I used it in two places. One protects the gas heater and the other is used to close off a room for the triplets to play safely. It was easy to install and really sturdy. I had to order more parts to attach to the wall and the North State people were agreat help. I think its a great deal. I would buy this again.

Wonderful gate–sturdy and adjustable

The superyard gates are great. We have 3, 2 wood and one metal. I was very pleasantly surprised that our metal one came in taupe, not white, which matches our walls beautifully. White would’ve been okay too and there’s no way to specify with Amazon. The adjustability of the gate is wonderful as all 6 panels can be taken apart and arranged to fit a non-uniform area. We installed this one around our entertainment center because I’ve seen too many kids who’ve pulled televisions onto their heads. That way he can’t put sandwiches into the DVD/VCR either!

Bought 2, back to buy more

I bought 2 of these three years ago. They have proved the most versatile baby product I own. The gates are certified for top or bottom of the stairs installation. The panels themselves can be easily interchanged and adjusted to fit whatever size or shape you are trying to block off. It can be attached to the wall or you can enclose it on itself, and finally you could even use zip ties to gate off or make safer walkways. We will be making our third move in three years now and I am SO glad I have these for my kids. Perfect to set up while you’re unpacking and use later to gate off the stairs and TV, etc after you have baby proofed. Get these not the plastic ones, they are heavy but that means the kids can’t easily push them or reshape them.My only beef is that my 3 yr old is now strong enough to reshape them himself at some joints. I’m not sure if it’s because I did not tighten the joints enough or if they have become loose from wear. I am inclined to think the latter since my husband tried tightening them and my son was still able to bend it back. Not really a huge issue unless you have it extended across a long area with it not enclosed on itself. This is a fabulous gate. I love it!**************************************************UPDATE:I am updating this review because I just received the new gate. It is not the same as the first two that I own. It will fit with them / connect with them just fine, but the lock / closure on the door is different. The old lock was a 3 step process – push in button, slide lever to the left and lift up on the whole gate to open. It could be done with one hand but only with practice. The new lock is only a two step mechanism – push down on button which is now MUCH larger (and hence easier for little hands to maneuver) and lift up on the gate and it opens. I absolutely would NOT trust this at the top of the stairs. When I originally bought this it was certified for top of the stairs installation, but I have a hard time believing it still would be. My 3.5 year old has yet to figure out the lock on the old gates, but I have no doubt he will figure this out within months. That is fine since I’m using the new one for a new baby (and even buying a 4th gate to make a large playpen for the baby), but I wanted to make sure other people knew that the lock was much simpler than it had been in the past. Please consider that when looking at reviews from 2 years ago. Otherwise, the quality of the gate is the same. Although there were some icky dead bugs taped inside which I thought was totally gross.

Sturdy and seems to be working

These gates are working well thus far. They are nicely made and look nice. My little one is not yet walking but is pulling up so I don’t know yet how they will hold up to full blown forces!Pros:Welded metal and nicely madeHave rubber pads and don’t scratch floorsExtra long widths to span those “open room” concept gapsConfigurableHas a gateCons:Gate is narrowMounting hardware is plastic (should be made of metal to be stronger)Have to be laid out in a curve shape to provide the necessary strength and not put too much load on the plastic hardware.

Great gate but it does take up a lot of space when not in use

I should be up front that although I love this and gave it five stars, we did return it. We bought it to pen in our now ten-month-old daughter and in the end it just took up too much space for it to work for our needs. It was really well made and incredibly sturdy. I liked how tall it was, too. We did purchase (and return) the two panel addition because this is pretty small otherwise. A really nice feature of the gate is that it swings closed on its own if you don’t open it all the way OR you can push it into the furthest open position and then it will stay open. So, there is a lot of flexibility with that. Beware for this and all other gates: as our daughter was learning to stand up she kicked her leg through and then fell backwards. It probably could have sprained her knee or leg at the very least since she was essentially stuck. We wound up buying mesh (like what is used in a breathable mesh crib liner) and running it around the bottom of the gate to keep her from kicking her legs through and getting stuck. If space weren’t an issue I would buy this again.

Great Gate

I have this gate and their ‘black’ ones for my daycare. Love that they are super durable, look nice, can be moved and positioned with ease…the only complaint I have is that if it’s in a high traffic area, over time the button to open the gate door starts to stick which is a real pain and I’m not sure how or if it can vp even be fixed. You might think these are pricey, but they are way better than most safety gates out there!

For the Little Daredevil in Your Life

I have had this for 3 months for my now 9 month old son. He is incredibly active, so this superyard is a great way to keep him safe whenever I need to do things like unload sharp knives from the dishwasher or take things out of the hot oven.According to my [easily frustrated and often impatient] husband, it was easy to assemble.

Sturdy, flexible, heavy but SMALL

Having had a positive experience with the plastic version of North States’ Superyard, I decided to go with a metal gate this time since my 20-month-old is pretty strong and could probably tip the plastic version by now.Unpacking and Assembly: this product is HEAVY. Maybe I’m a weakling, but if you’re carrying it up a flight of stairs like I needed to, wait and let your husband/boyfriend/friendly neighborhood lumberjack do it for you. It’s packaged very well, so definitely don’t try to unpack it without a good pair of scissors to cut through the zip ties that hold it together. The instructions were decently easy to follow, and it wasn’t too hard to configure it into the hexagon shape. Note that if you are using this as a gate, rather than trying to join the two ends to make a closed hexagon, you will have a noticeably easier time and really don’t need the instructions. Joining the two ends requires removing a few bars and maneuvering them into place, but it wasn’t difficult.Use and Durability: As the title of my review states, the finished area of the hexagon is SMALL. I usually like things bigger than smaller when it comes to my kid’s toys, so I thought ahead and bought the extension at the same time I bought the actual gate – I’m really glad I did. Without the extension, the play area is pretty lame. That being said, it’s very tall and very flexible at the joints, so there was no chance my tall toddler was going to climb out or push it over. He seemed pretty happy in it even before I put the extensions on, but personally I felt it needed to be bigger so it didn’t look & feel so much like a cage. The gate swings open and locks open if you’d like, which I thought was cool. All in all, this is a great product for the money (infinitely better than the munchkin or Summer Infant brands they sell at Babies ‘R’ Us, that’s for sure), but definitely buy the extension kit.

Sturdy!

We use this superyard to block access to our elliptical machine. The machine is in a corner and the fencing is plenty long enough to run from one wall, turn 90 degrees, and run to the other wall. The fencing is tall and secure, even freestanding. We don’t even have it secured to anything and it is very stable. If needed, it comes with hardware that allows attachment to a permanent object which would make it rock solid.

Four years and going strong

We’ve had this for over four years and it is holding up well even after being in storage for a while. The kids can’t climb up it or knock it over. They’ve come close to breaking the latch that holds the door closed but haven’t actually done it yet. Was worth every penny!

STURDY and ideal for toddlers

I read and researched MANY play yards and gates and then I found this one. You get what you pay for. Plastic gates fall over and don’t last long. I have even gone through several of the dividing gates. I bought 2 of these metal gates and attached them together to create a big closed-in area for my baby/toddler. My son is 12 months now and is trying to climb everything. The metal gates are free standing and I have it in a half moon shape around the livingroom. Mine is not attached to the wall. It has not fallen over one time. VERY STURDY!!! If you don’t have something heavy (I use the jumper) to keep it pushed up against the wall or side of couch, the toddler may be able to move the ends. This is the ONLY gate I trust.

Great for open floor plans/odd angles, but takes some work & the door is very narrow

I have an open floor plan, and was really surprised at how difficult it was to find baby or pet gates wider than your average doorway or hallway. I needed to cordon off the 70″ angled entrance into my kitchen. There are a few options out there that are (just barely) wide enough, but they couldn’t install at an angle. Because I’m using this to close off what would be a corner (if the walls ran all the way), at least one end of the gate needed to be able to attach to the wall at a less-than-90-degree angle. On this gate, the hardware itself mounts against the wall and sticks straight out about 3″, but the hinges (on the gate pieces) attached to it can swivel. The ability to install the bottom bracket (which isn’t really at the bottom) higher or lower on the wall to adjust for baseboard height or other obstacles is pretty handy. The gate comes with all the panels already connected (with the door at one end); you just have to close the loop. If you’re using this as something other than the circular pen it’s intended to be, be prepared to work at it a bit. Because I wanted the gate in the middle of the walkway (vs. right next to the wall), I had to remove panels from one side and add a panel to the other side of the door. It’s not complicated and was easy to do by myself. I ran into the same problem as previous reviewers, where the one of the ends I wanted to fasten to the wall didn’t match the mounting kit because the mounting kit assumes you’re using an even number of panels. The ends come off easily enough (held on by one screw underneath), so I was able to swap them out for the pieces I needed from one of the unused panels. The door only opens one way. If you open the door a little past 90 degrees (as far as it goes — this does NOT go 180 degrees), it will stay open. If you don’t, it will automatically close (somewhat forcefully) behind you, which is nice. The opening is only 13.5″, though, so wide-hipped buyers beware. With 3 panels (panel, door, panel) and the mounting brackets (one of which added 3″ to the width of the panels; I installed the other perpendicular to the gate so didn’t gain any additional width), this covered the 70″ opening while still keeping each piece at a bow-window-type angle to the others for stability. I don’t think it’s going to stand up to a toddler grabbing the bars and shaking vigorously (not for very long, anyway), but I think it should do the trick for the next year or so.Oh — and this is taupe, not white. Hard to tell from the photos, and it’s not in the product description (at least, it wasn’t when I purchased it).

Great for Extra Long Doorways!

I was very worried about buying this because it was hard to find the information I needed before purchasing, but I went ahead and took a leap of faith.I purchased this for our home to protect my 2 year old from getting harmed in the kitchen. We moved to a new apartment with a kitchen doorway almost 3 times the length of our previous one. We had been using a baby gate from The First Years with great success, but simply would not stretch to fit the doorway. We looked all over for a long baby gate. Wal-Mart, Target, Babies-R-Us, Buy Buy Baby, etc. We couldn’t find anything long enough. I decided to look online and found several gates which were long enough, but most had bad reviews. This was the only long gate I could find which had decent reviews. My toddler is way too old for a "playpen" like this, so we stretched it out long and mounted it to the wall to separate our kitchen from our dining room. We had plenty of room and we actually had a section leftover which we could add if we wanted. It’s very stable and holds nicely, even though my toddler has hung on it, kicked it during tantrums, and held onto it while jumping. It’s still standing! And we see no damage to the wall either! The latch itself works great. I can see a 6-8 year old figuring out how to work it, but not anyone younger. It does not swing back, so you have to shut it yourself, but that’s not a big deal to me.We are really happy with this gate!

Very Sturdy & Adaptable

This gate is not simple to install, but is easy enough with a couple of tools and a bit of patience. The joints between each section can be loosened to allow almost 360 degrees of movement between sections, which makes it very adaptable to odd / awkward spaces. The gate section can be opened with one hand, but is a bit clunky. Compared with other gates I’ve tried, this is the best.

Protect your stuff!

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. You can maneuver this gate to any shape you want. I used it as a "play pen" when my boy was younger. Now (at age 2) i use it to keep him out of the dining room where he can break my good stuff. Its long enough that it wraps around and I also have a secure area to put the Christmas tree. I recommend the superyard to all new parents!

Sturdy, Safe, Versatile and Good Color

The directions supplied are weak. It took me a bit to figure out how to connect the ends or two of these units together and I am still not sure how you remove a panel or move the gate section. The color is much better than a thought it would be. I read about removing screws. I did this but didn’t want to force anything. I couldn’t find a video or any additional explanation on North States site about this. I did a search for reviews that explained how to do this with no luck. The removal of the posts to connect the ends entails unscrewing the top piece using the post plastic grip with Lock and Release arrows on it. Pull it down this plastics grip. It is spring loaded and allows enough room to force the post out. Once this is done remove the bottom piece by turn and pulling up it rest in place. Then place the side with the top and screw side over the other gate side. Push them into place. The post then goes in the bottom first; just place the bottom hole over the screw; and move the top plastic grip piece down again and force the top into place. Tighten as needed and you are done. The bottom has rubber grommets to protect hard wood floors and prevents the gate from sliding. I choose this model for its weight and didn’t want our little guy to be able to push it over or move it easily. This unit is robust enough that we shouldn’t have to worry about that for some time.I like the gate operation. Not only having a button to push but also lifting the gate up to move it helps prevent it from being opened. It also closes on its own if not opened all the way.I would recommend this unit. It is versatile and can be used in a number of configurations.

Easy to setup and has multiple uses

What a great product! It is currently protecting our Christmas tree from our toddler. It is sturdy enough that she can’t pull it over when she pulls up on it. I am planning to buy the extension set so I can create an outdoor play place for her while shoveling snow or raking leaves. I also may use it in the future as a portable wall to protect my dog’s water and food bowls from our toddler.

Well made

This baby gate is well made in places, but the hinges and wall mount anchors feel a bit light. I just finished installing it so I don’t know how long they will last. The instructions are not written in any concise manner but it doesn’t matter, it’s pretty self explanatory.Update: There is no need to worry about the plastic bits; this has held up just fine with the toddler pushing on it and the 18lb cat climbing over several times a day.

Works great!!!

This is sturdy and strong. I bought two extra pieces and then put down some foam lettering on the floor underneath the play area. It’s plenty of room for my little one to play while I am making dinner or finishing up some housework. I didn’t attach this to the wall. I just made a big box area and placed some toys inside. My daughter is now 10 months and holds onto the sides. I never worry about the sides falling as it is very well made. It’s great that as she grows I have the capability of breaking this down into a smaller section and blocking off an area by attaching the end peices to walls. Or I can someday use this as a doggie gate divider.I would recommend this!!! I’ve seen those cheap plastic ones and this is by far much much better!!!

Configured It L-Shaped & Attached to Walls to Block Off a Corner

My wife and I wanted to block off our exercise bike in the corner of a room on the lower level of our home, as we have 3 little kids. My idea was to use this gate in an L-configuration and attach it to the walls in front and beside the exercise bike. For the most part, I would say that the gate works perfectly. It is simple to assemble, and it attaches easily to walls. My only complaint is that I expected the gate to be perfectly rigid and immovable when the panels were tightened up to one another. In fact, there is some flex and movement in the panels, even with just a 30-40 pound kid leaning or pulling on the panels. Still, this is not a really big problem. Compared to plastic versions of this product we have owned in the past, this product is a real winner.

Finally a gate my toddler can’t climb!

My toddler (now 1 year, 4 months) can climb anything. We have a big screen tv on a stand, and were looking for a safe way to keep him from knocking it off on himself. We got the "North States 3 in 1 Metal Superyard 2 Panel Extension, Taupe" to go with this. The gate alone is about the size of a pack and play. My son can’t climb this gate! It is heavy enough that he can’t (or just doesn’t try) pick it up and move it. It is well worth the price. I wish I had found this metal gate sooner!

Lifesaver!

I love this fence. I’ve had it for over a year and a half and it is still holding up well. I use it to block off a large opening between my dining room and living room. It keeps the kids in a safe area of the home so I don’t have to chase them around constantly. I don’t think I would want to live without this!It is very sturdy. The only problem I’ve had is when I leave the gate open sometimes my sons will hang on it and that bends the gate a bit so it doesn’t shut quite as well. I’ve been more careful with it since then and the problem seems to have gone away mostly. (bounced back into shape)The latch on the door is complicated enough to keep both my 2 and a half and 4 and a half year olds from opening it. I have not mounted this gate. I simply set it across the area in a zig zag and put two heavier pieces of furniture next to it on the ends to keep the fence in place. It works for my current set up.

Sturdy

I was originally targeting this " gate " with the extension " kit " to make a safe playground for my boy. Ended using it as a fence dividing our living room in 2 sections .. one kind " safe " section for him and the other one .. Construction it’s pretty sturdy, I mean it is heavy enough. Another feature that I like it’s all post have an anti slip pad in the bottom part. You can adjust your post to make it keep the way you shape the sections ( in my case flat like a fence ) and pads help ’em keep it that way. This one it’s sturdy enough so my 9 month baby boy who weights 20 pounds it’s able to use it as a firm support to walk along it. I came almost fully assembled so what you need to do it’s minimum. Before I forget .. good it’s kinda small .. but that does not affect my overall rating coz the largest biggest you make the door the more resistance you take from the hole structure. Door have a return hinge system that will allow you to keep it open ( at full open something like 110 degrees ) but if not .. and you open it less than 90 degrees ( aprox ) it will close automatically, which it’s hi value feature.I hope my short review make it justice .. but it worth every penny ..

Great purchase!

We bought two of these gates for our 9 month old son, and our future addition in November. Super easy to set up and take down, and easy to mount to the wall if need be. The gates are great, very easy to use. Very sturdy, there is no way my son will be able to push this over. Will be great in the future for other uses, such as for our dog. I can see these lasting a long time. We also bought eWonderWorld Rainbow (6 Colors) foam Wonder Mats: Extra Thick 36 Pieces 12" X 12" X ~9/16" in conjunction with these, and they are a wonderful and neccesary addition. I haven’t been this gratified with a purchase in a long time. I would highly recommend this playard!
