great matteress for the price
this is a pretty firm mattress and my baby seems to like it cuz he finally sleeps through the night (at 5 1/2 months) so I’m thinking maybe he just didn’t like the porta crib mattress that much. Either way it’s a great mattress- firm but comfortable at the same time and comes with a 30 yr warranty.
We put our crib together last night a realized that there must be a specific size mattress for our crib. I rushed to my computer to double check the dimensions of this mattress (which I purchased from amazon). The dimensions listed here on amazon for this mattress are wrong. I checked the tag on the mattress and it is 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 which is the exact size needed for our crib.
~*~*~Not too soft, Not too hard, Comfortable and Safe~*~*~
When my husband and I started looking for crib mattresses while I was pregnant with our twins we had NO idea what to look for. Thankfully, like always I started doing searches on Amazon to read reviews and that is where I learned about not having a mattress that was too soft. After much searching & reading we picked out 3 we liked best, one cheaper than this, one considerably more expensive & this one.The cheaper mattress was TOO soft & did not have many springs. My husband thought it seemed like a fine mattress to buy UNTIL I was easily able to take my hand and squeeze the sides of the mattress together, top touching bottom. Then I explained to him that once a baby is old enough to stand their weight would crush the mattress just like I did and that is unsafe. Plus babies are supposed to sleep on a firm surface, not soft. After my demonstration my husband understood.Next we did the same test with this mattress. You could not easily squeeze the sides of the mattress together, even my husband tried. It had a lot more springs than the cheaper one, it was firm but also comfortable. We also liked that it is basically water proof. And the plastic does not make any noise, nor is it loose at all.We stopped our search there and purchased 2 of these. My girls are almost 1 year and their beds show no signs of wear, no indentations, nothing wrong at all. My girls even hold onto the sides of their crib and jump and the mattress does not sink at all even when they jump at the very edge. My girls sleep all night in these so they must be comfortable.I don’t think you need to spend an arm and a leg in order to get a safe & comfortable mattress. Don’t get one so cheap that it is flimsy, doesn’t have many springs, that you can easily squeeze the sides together or that the plastic covering is loose. This one is perfect. It also fits perfectly snug in my girls cribs and every sheet we’ve used fits perfectly.
Consider how long you plan to use it first…
I bought this crib mattress for two of our 20 month old’s cribs (one at our home, another at her grandparents). With daily use, our lightweight (23 lb) toddler has slept on this mattress at our home. Over the course of 20 months, it went from a nice, firm mattress, to a soft, weak one with what we like to call a “dip” in it. It has in fact, become so soft that it allows a simple roll over in her sleep to cause the entire bed to creak — clearly not absorbing very much of her movement or body. It’s not supportive in the long term at all. It was good in the beginning, but it definitely did NOT hold up. We are now in the market for another mattress…So I can’t recommend this crib mattress anymore if one plans to get a minimum of ~2 years out of it. I once gloated about in the beginning of our daughter’s life, no more.
So far, great!
Our toddler has been sleeping on this, and jumping on it (unfortunately) for almost three months now. It is holding up great. Our son is 6 months now, I’m considering replacing the mattress he uses now with this one, because it is much more lightweight. The mattress he is on right now is VERY firm, and VERY VERY heavy. The Sealy Baby Ultra is not as firm as it could be, but it is firm enough.I recommend this as long as you know there is a little bit of give. Not like a pillow, though. More like a hammock. Our toddler weighs 30 pounds and her head and bottom sink a little bit, but not very much. I think it serves to keep the spine aligned and relieve pressure points. Our son doesn’t sleep well. Could be from the hard mattress he is on now (not the sealy) but I don’t know for sure.Overall, go with this unless you want a rock!
Great mattress for a good price
I am very happy with this mattress. It’s firm, but not too firm, and is a reasonable price. Recommended.
This mattress is strudy, has a wipeable suface so that clean up after a “accident” is a breeze. In my experience it doesn’t seem to absorbe smell so it doesn’t smell after you wipe it off with plain water. It fits my divinci crib very snuggly. Great mattress.
I researched mattresses and decided on this one. They also sold this mattress at Sears but it cost on sale about $15 more than what I got it for at Amazon. It fits perfect in the crib and my son (3 mo.) sleeps well on it.
Once they transition to toddler I’d say get a new mattress.-When I first used it, I hated that it was unbreathable and plastic coated, especially during the hot months. But a many accidents later I realized, it was the only choice.-It’s a great, mattress for a baby/newborn, on the softer, but still supportive side.-I say upgrade once they can stand/walk, because it’s light duty, not made for jumping and not all that resilient with the increased weight of a toddler over an infant.-This mattress has maintained it’s status though with awards and ‘Best Buy’s through the last few years though, so I’m sticking with it.
Does the job
My daughter has slept on this mattress for two years and she’s always been a great sleeper. I see no reason to give this anything less than 5 stars. It’s been great, and fits her crib, sheets and mattress pads perfectly. I’ll probably order the same mattress for our baby that is due in a few months.
fits perfectly in the crib, seems like the perfect mix of firm/soft. Baby is 5 months old, so we’ll see how it holds up (but I think it has a great warranty too)
Comfy mattress, superior quality
I bought this in September 2009 to use in my daughter’s crib a DaVinci Kalani Convertible Crib. It fits snugly in the crib and my daughter sleeps very well on it. I do know have anything else to compare it against but I would recommend to others since my daughter likes it. The mattress is not super hard, has a little softness to it but not too much.Update – Jan 2012, mattress is superior. my daughter is now a very active 2.5 year old and jumps on it nightly and it has held up very well. Great buy, well worth the little bit extra I paid over standard mattress from Sealy.
