- Adjustable shell
- Fits babies from 5-35 lbs.
inserts are not easily customized
Since you gave to use the insert with a snap, you cant customize the absorbency. The insert moves around since its not in a pocket, and overall I was very disappointed. I thought it would be easier because no stuffing, but I was wrong. I suggest skipping it and going for a pocket diaper. The quality seems good, and the liner is reasonably soft, and strong velcro. Thats why it gets 2 stars. I’m so glad i only bought one, I wont be buying anymore.
Daddy Approved, soft, very adjustable, and easy to use
This diaper is the one I leave right on top of the changing table so my husband can find it. It is as easy to put on baby as a disposable diaper with the velcro that crosses over at the waist. The best feature is the toggle on the inside to adjust the leg openings which is genius, the Fuzzibunz Elite diapers also have adjustable leg elastic but they are much more complicated with numbered buttons, the toggle allows for a truly one size and custom fit for our baby which was nice when he was a tiny newborn, then he grew fast and had the chunkiest thighs, and now he is catching up and slimming down a bit. When this diaper came in the mail, the first thing I noticed was how SOFT it is. So nice against baby’s skin. The Softbums inserts have a snap on one end to snap into the cover and a tag that makes it helpful to know which side is supposed to face up. As long as his poo doesn’t spill over the side of the insert and onto the cover, I can reuse it several times with new inserts before laundering. That being said, it usually does get on the cover. The only thing I don’t like is that for some reason these diapers hold in the ammonia smell more than my others. I’m not sure if it’s their thickness or the insert/pod material but it takes some serious stripping/laundering to get them to not smell after having an ammonia problem :/ Also, it has leaked a couple of times around the legs where the fleece inner has wicked moisture onto baby’s clothes.
Softbums shell fits my newborn. Review compares with grovia diapers.
I bought these diapers a month after my baby was born but I wish that I would have bought them sooner. I originally bought the grovia newborn diapers. I hated them they leaked every time I put them on my newborn. I think that part of the problem at least was the size of my babies legs. He was 20in and 7 pounds about, he had very skinny legs. I sold them and bought this system. They have elastic that can be sized in the legs and so it got tight enough to fit my 7lb baby and I think that it could have fit a baby smaller. The "pod" does not come with this shell but for my newborn I got mini dry touch "pods" and then when he started really wetting those I the regular dry touch "pods". The pods are also very absorbent. The dry touch pod is so soft and dries fast even on low heat in the dryer. They have both velcro and snap closures on the shells. I bought some of each. I think that the snaps will last longer and work great but the velcro is so so so much easier. He was about 12 pounds when I switched to the regular size and about 2 1/2 months. Which is great because I could use my shells from newborn to hopefully potty training. This system is by far my favorite. If I would have known I would have bought all of these. I got a bum genius newborn. It was wide between the legs and did not absorb much so would not of even lasted till 2 months. I also got a little joey which fit great but would not have lasted long for absorbency. I got a swaddlebe newborn diaper which was bigger and more have absorbed more but did not fit my babies skinny legs. The grovia newborn was my least favorite and I had about the most of those 22 diapers. To diaper my baby full time I bought 9 shells and 24 pods. At about 2 1/2 months my baby also fit into the grovia regular size diapers that I bought. I do like a few things about that system better. I think that the shell will fit longer but I don’t know for sure. The shell does not adjust in the leg elastic but will adjust in the rise of the diaper. My husband like the inserts better on the grovia because they are tapered and I like that they have a water proof backing so the shell never get wet not matter how much he pees. The grovia inserts take twice as long to dry compared to the softbums pods. We use both so we have a huge stash. I have 12 shells for grovia and 20 inserts. I got all these because I originally bought newborn grovia diapers and did not think i would use them at the same time as the grovia one size diapers.
A really great intro to cloth
With my second child, I decided to take the plunge into cloth diapering. I did a TON of research before deciding to try Softbums. I chose this system bc it seemed like the easiest way to go and the system my husband was most likely to buy off on. He did. We have only been using them for a few days, but we are both completely sold. We use the mini pods for our newborn. The super pods will be MUCH too big for some time. We use the bamboo during the day and the microfiber at night. I bought some of each to try, but the microfiber pods are much bulkier and less absorbent (go figure) so for the sake of the diaper fitting under clothes and her not looking like she is all butt, we use the bamboo during the day for a trimmer fit. They are as easy as disposables to put on and changing the pods are super easy. I really love these diapers. The only leak problems we have had are when my husband has failed to tuck the pod completely into the shell, so operator error. Since we have only used them on a newborn, I can’t testify to their performance on a mobile baby. And with waking up every few hours in the night, I am not sure how the absorbency will go when she is asleep for a whole night, but what I have seen so far has made me very optimistic.I deduct a star because I find their customer service to be really lacking. I went to their website to purchase a large package with pods, but they were out of the pods forever, despite several promises of “next week.” I got tired of waiting and ordered from Sweet Bottoms Baby for the same price except with free shipping. I also don’t like that they don’t have prints except for their “calendar bums” and I have not been super impressed with those. They have older calendar prints available, but they are all very boy leaning. The only color they have for girls is the pink and it is not the same as it looks online. It is the color of a hunk of Double Bubble gum- not cute. You can find pics all over the internet of really cute girl prints, but they have all been discontinued.Overall, a great system to use, but poor customer service from the company and less options for colors and prints for baby girls. Those points annoy me, but I get around the customer service thing by shopping elsewhere and the look of them is not as important as the ease of use, so I sacrifice cuteness for function.
A good system but not perfect
I orginally bought a Soft Bums Echo for the sizing system and it is wonderfully easy to adjust; fit my tall & skinny child very well. But the real prize is in the softness, it’s so soft that it doesn’t leave any marks at all. I’ve found that the organic hemp or bamboo liners still rub him a little harsh but not these they lie right up against his skin with no irritation. For all this softness you’re giving up absorbency right? WRONG! After only 2 pre-washes (they recommend 5-6 to start) the pod held 2hrs of pee without the shell feeling damp and they only got more absorbent with each wash – and they still dry fairly quick (my only complaint against Grovia soakers). My only concern that prevents me from stocking an entire collection of them is the size of the pods – they are HUGE – I’m glad they cover the whole shell front to back & side to side but on my 18lb 8mth old I have to nearly double it over. This adds extra bulk which means I have to be choosey about which outfits he wears (not an issue with the Grovia). By the manufacturer the idea is to provide protection where you’re baby needs it most (front for boys, middle/back for girls) but in my opinion it’s more bulk then really needed. Be advised that the shell will easily fit a newborn but (in my opinion) you’ll want to use the mini pods or possibly prefolds until 15-18lbs minimum. While my son was relatively immobile I loved this system (even with the bulk issue) one of my “go-to” diapers but after he really started moving around I noticed it drooping & the folded pod started to fall out the side. I’ve tried at least 4 different adjustments on the bungee & making the velcro tighter but it still either falls down or the pod slips out. It’s still my favorite for car trips or similar where I know he’ll be sitting for a long time but I try to avoid it for playtime – so for that I have to deduct a star.Color note- I got the nuclear pumpkin & it is definitely “nuclear” as bright as a traffic cone not an issue for me, I think it still looks cute particularly on my boy but some may find it to bright or garish.
